Hackers Send SMS to Unlock Car, Start Engine

A couple of security researchers from iSEC Partners demonstrated at the ongoing Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas how to unlock a car via merely a text message.

The researchers used a Subaru Outback to showcase their skills, and they not only managed to unlock the car, but also started the engine, all remotely.

Apparently the two geniuses, named Mathew Solnik and Don Bailey, used an Android phone and a technique which they referred to as the “war texting” to exploit a couple of remote control devices, used for locking and unlocking cars.

“But the same system is used to control phone, power, traffic systems. I think that’s the real threat,” Bailey stated. [read more]
